Abstract
Hypodontia, defined as the developmental absence of one or more teeth, represents one of the most prevalent dental anomalies in the human population. The aim of this review article was to evaluate the prevalence of hypodontia in both primary and permanent dentitions and to assess the factors influencing its occurrence. The prevalence of hypodontia varies across different populations and is commonly classified according to the number of missing teeth. Its etiology is considered multifactorial, with genetic factors playing a predominant role; mutations in genes involved in odontogenesis may result in hypodontia, either as an isolated condition or as part of syndromic presentations. Clinical features frequently include microdontia, enamel hypoplasia, ectopic tooth eruption, and occlusal disturbances. Management of hypodontia is complex and necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing orthodontic, prosthetic, and surgical interventions. Treatment planning should be individualized, taking into consideration both functional requirements and aesthetic outcomes.
Key words: hypodontia, microdontia, orthodontic treatment, prosthodontics, multidisciplinary approach
